Universities seek to raise tuition up to 8.7 percent
|
TOPEKA, Kan. (AP) - Officials at the state's six universities
are proposing tuition increases for the fall of up to 8.7 percent.
The changes would generate at least 22 million dollars in
revenue over the next academic year. The universities would use the
money for faculty salary increases and to sustain ongoing programs.
The plans are being presented today to the Kansas Board of
Regents, which expects to vote on the proposals next month.
The biggest jump would be for incoming freshman from Kansas who
enroll at the University of Kansas under a "compact" program it
started last year. They would pay 8.7 percent more than freshmen
who enrolled last year, but their tuition would be locked in place
for four years.

Kansas State University is proposing a 7.4 percent increase in
tuition for some of its juniors and seniors. For the first time,
its officials are proposing to charge more to those upperclassmen
than to freshmen and sophomores. |
