US attorney for Kan. Touts Civil Rights

WICHITA, Kan.  -  U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom says if law enforcement officials violate someone's civil rights while investigating terrorism then the government becomes as bad as the people they're trying to protect the public from.
Grissom, the top federal prosecutor in Kansas, made the comments Wednesday during a Wichita State University event commemorating Law Day in Kansas.  Grissom's talk was about protecting public safety and human rights.
Grissom told the more than 30 students who attended that the government monitors hate groups such as white supremacists without violating anyone's rights.  He also said that to his knowledge the federal government has not used the expanded Patriot Act powers in Kansas.
Grissom oversees about 49 assistant U.S. attorneys in Kansas.  He was nominated by President Obama in 2010.
