Thousands Back Home at Ft. Riley

For 15 months, they held their breath, said their prayers and closed their eyes when checking e-mail. Spouses worried that their soldiers were in harm's way in Iraq.

Those soldiers, 3,400 of Fort Riley's First Infantry Division, are now home, back after a deployment to Baghdad. They were one of the U.S. brigades that comprised the surge of soldiers aimed at quelling violence in the Iraqi capital.

It wasn't an easy fight, either: 38 of the brigade's soldiers were killed and hundreds others wounded.

Spouses say that they learned a lot about themselves and the Army during the deployment. They also know that they don't like worrying about their loved ones or being a single parent; 4,100 Fort Riley soldiers remain at war, with another brigade in training for deployment.
