Kansas Secretary of State Ron Thornburgh has applauded the Supreme Court ruling upholding Indiana’s voter identification law.

“Today’s ruling by the court will serve to protect the sanctity and integrity of elections throughout our nation and our state.  Voter identification is critical to the security of the electoral process and something I’ve fought for during my time as Secretary of State,” said Thornburgh.

The Indiana law, which requires photo identification, differs from measures previously supported by Secretary Thornburgh. In the past, he has called for laws that would require voters to provide a single source document, such as a utility bill, bank statement, military ID, etc.

“The Indiana law goes much farther than many of our previous attempts at voter identification here in Kansas – all of which were vetoed by Governor Sebelius.  I once again encourage the legislature and our governor to do everything within their power to bring this greater level of election security to our state.”
