Thebook’s title is “That Used to be Us … how America fell behind in the world it invented and how we can come back” … by Thomas Friedman and Michael Mandelbaum. This is more than 300 pages of powerful evidence that the United States is slipping in the world … badly.
The authors look at industry, innovation, research, education, and politics … and conclude that our nation has lost its edge.
They write that being exceptional as a nation “… has to be earned continually, like a baseball player’s batting average. We have treated ‘American exceptionalism’ as just another entitlement – just another thing we get to enjoy without paying for. Those days are over. America’s exceptionalism is now in play. It is not an entitlement. It is not a defined benefit”.
Friedman and Mandelbaum also write: “In the first decade of the twenty-first century, the majority of American households made no economic gains at all”.
More on this book’s message tomorrow.
Our thought for today is from Sir Winston Churchill:
“The price of greatness is responsibility.”
