Dave Unruh was a small business owner and a wrestling referee for years, so he never gets too upset when he hears from concerned citizens. The chairman of the Sedgwick County Commission is in his third term on the board, and he tells me it will be his last.
As we talked for the “Issues 2011” program on K-N-S-S, Dave explained that offering an early-retirement package to more than 300 county employees will not account for all the nine million dollars in spending cuts the county needs. He told me layoffs are coming, that it is simply unavoidable.
As far as raising the property tax rate … not going to happen, says Unruh. The commission has cut most of the property tax increase it passed several years ago, when the voters responded by booting out two commissioners. Unruh says the current board is conservative, and not in a mood to increase taxes at all.
As always, Dave and I had a good discussion. There is a podcast on our web site .... K-N-S-S radio dot com.
Our thought for today is from Malcolm Forbes:
“It’s so much easier to suggest solutions when you don’t know too much about the problem.”
