A Wichita man has been sentenced to one year on federal probation for falsely claiming that he was awarded a Purple Heart for combat wounds.

59-year-old Albert Barker was also ordered to serve 100 hours of community service. He pleaded guilty in April to one count of falsely representing himself in January 2006 as having been awarded the medal.

In his plea, Barker admitted that he submitted a fraudulent Army General Order 164 that he altered to show that he had won a Purple Heart. The government dropped a second similar count as part of the plea deal, and prosecutors also agreed to seek the low end of sentencing guidelines.

The Purple Heart is awarded to members of the military who were wounded or killed in combat.
