Rick Santorum left the race for president shortly after his three-year-old daughter spent the weekend in a hospital. Bella Santorum had pneumonia. She was born with a rare genetic disorder.
I don’t know how anyone could run for president with that kind of personal challenge.
Indications are that Rick Santorum might not have won his home state of Pennsylvania in the coming primary. He sought the Republican nomination based on his conservative credentials and his experience in the House and Senate, but his campaign was hobbled by a lack of money and organization. Conservatives also divided their support between Santorum and Newt Gingrich and – possibly – Ron Paul.
Mitt Romney forges ahead as the G-O-P front-runner … now trying to define his views in opposition to those of President Obama. More and more, voters are focusing on that choice: Obama or Romney.
It sure looks like a nasty campaign ahead. Let’s hope the important issues won’t be completely lost in the bombast.
Our thought for today is from David Broder:
“Anybody who wants the presidency so much that he’ll spend two years organizing and campaigning for it is not to be trusted with the office.”
