One Killed in Wichita Car/Train Collision

One Wichita man died and another was critically injured after a car-train collision near 31st Street South and K-15, in southeast Wichita.

The driver, 34-year-old Gerson Banegas, died at the scene. The passenger, 32-year-old Cesar Paz, was taken to Wesley Medical Center in very critical condition; both men are Honduras natives with Wichita addresses.

The freight train pushed the wrecked car about a quarter-mile before coming to a halt after the crash at about 6:40 a.m. Tuesday.

Rescuers used Jaws of Life equipment to remove the two people from the small, silver car.
