CHENEY, Kan. - One person is dead after a kiteboarding accident in on Cheney Lake in Kingman County. Officials say the man was kiteboarding in the Hobie Beach recreation area on the west side of the lake.
Park Ranger Mike Satterlee says the victim is a 42-year-old man from Wichita who was spending the weekend on the lake with his family. His name has not been released.
Witnesses told investigators the wind caught hold of the man's kite, pulled him into the air and then dropped him crashing back down onto the water. He died at the scene.
Lake goers say there were several kiteboarders on the water for most of the day. They say the wind did not seem to be any stronger when the accident happened.
The Kingman County Sheriff's office is investigating the death.
