Ever been poor; I mean rally up-against-it poor? I’ve been close – temporarily – and I’ve known poor people. I agree with what Arnold Bennett once said: ‘If you’ve ever really been poor, you remain poor at heart all your life”. In other words, you never forget it.
The U.S. Census Bureau considered 1 in 7 Kansans poor in 2010, compared with 1 in 6 nation-wide. 16.3% of Americans had no health insurance in 2010 … 12.7% in Kansas.
Not surprising when we realize that the national unemployment rate has been hovering around 9% for two years. This is still a wonderful country for most Americans, but I think most folks would like to see the poverty rate go down. It’s good for the economy and it’s good for our national self image. Calling ourselves the greatest nation on Earth … in my opinion … carries some obligation to help those who are less fortunate.
Of course, gainful employment would do a lot to battle poverty. We desperately need jobs!
Our thought for today is from John F. Kennedy:
“If a free society cannot help the many who are poor, it cannot save the few who are rich.”
