WICHITA, Kan. -- Following a team meeting with the coach Monday afternoon, a Wichita State baseball player said he's 100% behind embattled coach Gene Stephenson. The players met with Stephenson at the baseball complex in a previously scheduled meeting. Stephenson left the office after 5:00 p.m. and told reporters, "don't even bother. No comment, no comment".
Pitcher Cale Elam said the players were also to blame for the Shockers' disappointing season. Wichita State's season came to end Saturday after two consecutive losses in the NCAA regional in Manhattan.
Stephenson has one year remaining on his contract. He is the second winningest coach in NCAA Division 1 history with more than 1,800 wins. The Shockers have been to the College World Series seven times, but their last appearance was in 1996.
University officials instructed KNSS to hold off airing the final Gene Stephenson radio show. The show had been scheduled to air Monday at 6:00 p.m.
