Memorial Day

It was first called Decoration Day and it began as a day to remember the soldiers who died in the Civil War. The name was eventually changed to Memorial Day.
For many Americans, today is nothing more than the last day in a three-day weekend. Going to the lake, picnics, and family gatherings are part of the day. The cemeteries all try to plan something special.
For many years, my father’s family reunited at the city park in Iola, Kansas for a big picnic, softball game, and a visit to my grandparents’ graves at the cemetery. Several uncles and aunts are also buried there. The reunion has lost its steam over the years, as fewer family members are able to make the trek to Iola.
My dad and brother are buried at Resthaven in west Wichita. Both were military veterans, although it seems this day is open to remember all loved ones who have died.
I hope you are connecting with your family today.

Our thought for today is from an unknown author:

“So live that your memories will be part of your happiness.”
