A married couple died in a motorcycle accident in east Wichita, after they were caught speeding in the construction zone near Kellogg & Rock Road.
Police spokesman Gordon Bassham says at about 7:00 Tuesday evening, the motorcycle was caught going about 65 miles per hour in a 35 m.p.h. zone. A police officer stepped out toward the road, and the motorcycle almost stopped, then it sped off east-bound on Kellogg. Two police cars with lights & sirens followed, losing sight of the motorcycle west of the Kansas Turnpike bridge. By the time police arrived at Kellogg & Webb, the motorcycle had crashed in the southbound lanes of Webb, and both people on the bike were lying on the road.
Several witnesses report that the speeding motorcycle lost control as it approached Webb Road, and hit the curb. The passenger, 35-year-old Brandy Spencer, was declared dead at the scene. The driver, 32-year-old William Spencer, was taken to Wesley Medical Center for surgery, and he died about three hours later. They were not wearing helmets. Three people have died in motorcycle accidents this week in Wichita.
