Is college education for everyone?

Yesterday I told you American student loan debt now exceeds credit card debt. This spring, two-thirds of college graduates are expected to have debt, owing an average of $29,000. So, many young people are leaving college with a degree, a lot of debt, and pretty dismal employment prospects.
As the price tag for a degree goes up, Kansas government is lowering its financial support for state universities. My fear is that middle class Kansans are seeing the college dream disappearing.
And yet, I’ve been told by at least one local college president that not all people belong in universities. Some apparently are not bright enough, and others don’t have the appropriate natural gifts.
So, what about trade schools? Every time I take my car to a dealer or call a plumber, I think about the money these people can earn by working with their heads and their hands. Not everybody can be an academic success … and not everybody can do a brake job or fix an air conditioner.

Our thought for today is from Eric A. Burns:

“Greatness is more than potential. It is the execution of that potential. Beyond the raw talent, you need the appropriate training. You need the discipline. You need the inspiration. You need the drive.”
