Homeowner Shot by Men Firing at Targets

SEDGWICK COUNTY, Kan. - Target shooting turned into a neighbor being shot down Sunday afternoon near Andale.

It happened shortly after 2 p.m. near 29th Street North and 215th Street West. A homeowner was in his backyard when he was shot in the buttocks

Deputies say five men between the ages of 18 and 20 were in a field shooting at a dead stump with no backstop. A bullet flew about a half mile before hitting the homeowner.

A family member took him to St. Teresa Hospital in northwest Wichita. From there, he was transferred to St. Francis in serious condition. Deputies say his injuries are not life-threatening.

The victim's family say the man's son was outside with him, and they shouldn't have to worry about playing in their own backyard.

"It's dangerous," said Brenda Mies, the victim's sister-in-law. "People need to learn that guns aren't toys. Go to a shooting range where it's safe."

Deputies say the five men who were target shooting and the victim are being questioned by investigators. It's not yet known if charges will be filed.

Take an NRA shooting saftey class. They are free.
Even in boy scouts they say don't shoot when you don't know where the bullet will go. never point a firearm at anyone. Simple stuff that all dads need to teach their kids. These kids either didn't get the memo or didn't care. I say they need to pay for the injured persons medical bills and lost wages ! And then some.
