I sometimes hear criticism when I criticize corporations. I am certainly aware of their positive contributions to our economy … engaging in honest commerce, employing many people, involvement in civic organizations. But I am also aware of corporations’ potential to do harm … unethical or illegal activity that damages individuals and groups.
Boeing is my case in point. Over the corporation’s many years in Wichita, it employed thousands of tax-paying citizens. Boeing and its workers paid millions in local taxes every year. The company also received 3.5 billion dollars in local industrial bonds since 1979 to finance the Wichita plant … plus 650 million dollars in property tax abatements.
In reality, every citizen in the county worked for Boeing. Public money helped finance their growth here.
Boeing has repaid us by leaving town. I think that corporation behaved shamefully.
Maybe we’ve learned something about corporate power and corporate ethics. Big companies giveth … and they can taketh away.
Our thought for today is from Martin Luther King Jr.:
“Our scientific power has outrun our spiritual power. We have guided missiles and misguided men.”
