Wichita State University president Don Beggs announced last week that he will retire in June of next year. Beggs began his job at W-S-U in 1999 … just about the time I was resuming my broadcasting career at K-N-S-S. When I began doing our “Issues” public affairs program, Dr. Beggs was one of the local leaders I asked for an interview. It was a positive experience, which he and I have repeated several times over the years.
Don Beggs is an interesting man. He is always patient and honest with the media … expressing himself well on radio and television. He is always friendly. He gives his full attention and he doesn’t know how to give you any political double talk.
He and his wife Shirley have devoted much of their free time to involvement in the community. They never look down their noses at anyone. The Beggses have been a perfect fit for the university and this community.
They plan to retire back home in Illinois. We appreciate the time they gave us in Wichita.
Our thought for today is from Robert S. McNamara:
“Brains, like hearts, go where they are appreciated.”
