Democrats took a real pounding in the midterm elections. Republicans gained control of the House of Representatives … and left Democrats with a slim majority in the Senate. Several Tea Party candidates won.
Here in Kansas, Republicans captured all the top jobs in the state … governor, attorney general, secretary of state, secretary of treasury. They also retained the U-S Senate seat that opened up when Sam Brownback dropped out to run for governor. That means both of the state’s senators and all four representatives are Republicans.
The most interesting race in south central and southeast Kansas was for the 4th District seat that was held for many years by Todd Tiahrt. Republican businessman Mike Pompeo … with no government experience … clobbered Democrat state senator Raj Goyle … 58% to 37%. Both candidates spent a ton of money, with at least part of it coming from political action organizations. Both candidates also engaged in numerous debates and forums. As a media person, I appreciated their willingness to stand up and address the issues before the public.
Our thought for today is from Ralph W. Sockman:
“Be careful that victories do not carry the seed of future defeats.”
