Wichita, Kan. - An historic Wichita monument is in storage awaiting repairs after a crack was discovered in its base. County officials say a contract conservator discovered a crack in the base of the Liberty Statue which rests atop the Soldiers and Sailors Civil War Monument, outside of the historic Sedgwick County Courthouse.
The monument has sat outside the south side of the courthouse since it was completed and dedicated in June of 1913. The copper Liberty Statue has been transported to storage facilities where an engineer will determine what repairs need to be made and how to protect the statue from future damage.
The 100 year-old monument is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
