Bullet Fired at Downtown Wichita Cop

At about 1:45 Tuesday afternoon, a Wichita police officer called emergency dispatchers, reporting that he'd been shot in the south parking lot of the Wichita Area Technical College in the 300 block of N. Emporia.

Upon further assessment, the officer determined that he had not been hit by the bullet, but his radio had been blown apart. The officer who was shot at initially believed the shot may have come from the near-by high-rise Shirkmere Apartments in the 200 block of N. Topeka, or from that direction.

Wichita police completely shut off a two-block area around the scene, shutting down parts of 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Streets, as well as Emporia, Topeka, and St. Francis.

Teams of police shut down the Shirkmere, and did a thorough room-by-room search of the building, including the rooftop.

Within a half-hour of the shooting, police determined that the bullet was most likely shot from somewhere nearer to the Technical College, perhaps in the parking lot areas to the south or the west. Everybody in the College at the time of the shooting was gathered by police into the school's auditorium.
