The Kansas Bioscience Authority’s mission is to encourage biotechnology businesses to locate labs and other facilities in Kansas. It would seem the Authority’s unstated mission is to make sure its employees are very well paid by the state.
The Wichita Eagle reported this week that the Senate Commerce Committee got a look at the Authority’s spending records and some of the committee members did not like what they saw. The Authority’s C-E-O – Tom Thornton – has received a $265,000 salary plus a $100,000 bonus. C-F-O Janice Katterhenry is number two … at $175,000 and a $24,000 bonus. It turns out 12 of the agency’s 21 employees are paid more than $100,000 … and 12 additional employees received a total of $106,000 in bonus money.
Committee chairwoman Susan Wagle called the salaries “very exorbitant” … with the C-E-O at four times the governor’s salary. The committee called for a legislative post audit.
As a taxpayer I’d like to add a couple of adjectives to the Bioscience Authority’s pay scale. How about outrageous, disgusting, shocking, disgraceful … need I continue?
Our thought for today is from Lewis H. Lapham:
“The supply of government exceeds the demand.”
