Another one bites the dust

Another bad guy bites the dust. Moammar Gadhafi has been killed by rebels … joining the ranks of Osama bin Laden, Saddam Hussein, and others. Gadhafi ruled Libya for 42 years, but it took just eight months to end his dictatorship, with the help of NATO air support.
Not only did he mistreat his own people, but remember, Gadhafi was responsible for the 1988 bombing of Pan Am 103, in which a number of Americans were murdered.
Now what, for Libya? Stability could bring 1.6 million barrels of oil a day back onto the world markets. That would help the Libyan economy, and probably create a few friends among oil consumers around the world. The United States obviously has an interest.
Will the Libyan rebels embrace democracy, free market capitalism, civil liberties? Or will they choose a path of continued oppression … only with a new set of masters?
The world is watching.
Our thought for today is from Franklin D. Roosevelt:
“True individual freedom cannot exist without economic security and independence. People who are hungry and out of a job are the stuff of which dictatorships are made.”
