The Associated Press-GfK poll should serve as a wake-up call for the White House, and an opportunity knock for Republicans. Four out of five surveyed said the economy is in poor shape, and that’s not good for President Obama. More Americans are convinced the country is headed in the wrong direction … and that’s not good for Obama.
Does the President deserve re-election? 48% say “yes” … while 47% say “no”.
It seems Americans are no longer buying the “we inherited a mess” line. Circumstances may be controlling Obama’s performance more than ideology, but that can always be the explanation for failure. I don’t think most Americans are concerned with whether Obama is a Liberal or a Conservative, they just want to see the economy improve … and they’re beginning to lose patience.
Republicans need to find a convincing candidate who can outline specific proposals to get the economy going again. Social and ideological issues may find footing with the party faithful, but most Americans just want to believe someone has a plan to make things better.
Our thought for today is from George Jackson:
“Patience has its limits. Take it too far, and it’s cowardice.”
