Wichita BOE takes first look at '17-'18 school budget

WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita Board of Education members got a first glimpse Monday night of the early workings of the 2017-2018 school budget. District CFO Susan Willis started off the presentation with "good news" about the current budget.

"This tells me our plan is working," said Willis.  "That the cuts we made covered our cost increases and we are right on track for this fiscal year."

Willis added that dark days are on the horizon as they plan for next year's budget. State lawmakers have yet to agree on a new school finance formula. Added to this, the state currently faces a budget gap of nearly $320 million dollars, prompting lawmakers to propose a 5% mid-year cut to education spending to help shore up the deficit. Willis says Wichita schools can't afford that.

More will be known about next year's budget as the end of this fiscal year draws closer.
