Wichita Man Sentenced in Jewelry Store Burglary

HUTCHINSON, Kan.  -  A Wichita man who pleaded guilty to smashing a car into the front R. Westphal Jewelers in Hutchinson in an attempt to steal jewelry from the store received the maximum sentence Friday of four and a half years in prison.
After hearing from the property and business owners, Reno County District Court Judge Trish Rose sentenced Derrick Glover, 39, to 54 months behind bars.  Rose said the reason Glover received the sentence was because of the financial and emotional damage resulting from the crimes, as well as Glover’s active role in them.
Glover, along with Kenya Breakfield, 34, of Wichita, and Francis Lamar Johnson, 44, of Newton, was accused with driving a 1999 Nissan Maxima through the front windows of the Main Street building at about 2:00 a.m., Jan. 12.  Video surveillance showed Glover as the first to enter the store, where he quickly began smashing display cases with a tire iron.
Damages are still being calculated, but are so far, total more than $50,000.
