Man Escapes Custody In Hays, Crashes During Chase In Great Bend



     GREAT BEND, Kan. - A man who escaped custody in Hays early Sunday morning was apprehended in Great Bend after crashing during a police chase that reached speeds of 100 miles-per-hour.
     Twenty-year-old Matthew Kloke escaped custody in Hays around 8 a.m. and stole a car, Hoisington police said in a news release. An officer spotted the car coming into Hoisington about 40 minutes later and followed while he awaited backup.
     Speeds increased to over 100-miles-per-hour as the stolen Pontiac Grand Prix headed toward Great Bend on Highway 281. While attempting to avoid stop sticks, Kloke lost control of the car, which rolled and hit a fence near 31st Street and Washington on the town's north side. No injuries were reported.
     Kloke was arrested and booked into the Barton County jail for felony flee and elude, reckless driving and possession of stolen property. His bond was set at $5,000.
     No more information has been released.
