Lyons Police Investigate Man Posing as Police Officer

PITTSBURG, Kan. - Lyons Police are investigating after a man posing as a police officer, tried to cash a fake payroll check at a liquor store.
The incident appears to be related to reports in Belle Plaine, in Sumner County where a man tried, but failed to cash bogus checks. In both cases, the man has used a badge and claimed to be and Adams County deputy.
Adams County, Kansas does not exist. In the Belle Plaine investigation, the department and the Kansas Bureau of    Investigation identified a person of interest, 45 year-old Robert Wayne Helms of Pittsburg, Kansas.
Helms is listed as an absconder by the Kansas Department of Corrections, with past convictions for forgery, theft, and kidnapping. He has contacted law enforcement and stated he is on the run.
Helms should be considered armed and dangerous. Anybody with information about Helms is asked to call their local police immediately or to contact the KBI at 1-800-KS-CRIME
