HUTCHINSON, Kan. - Hutchinson Police have arrested a Wichita man in connection with the January 12 'smash-and-grab' burglary of R. Westphal Jewelers. Officers made the arrest Friday at a Wichita residence with the help of the Wichita Police Department.
Derrick D. Glover, 38, was arrested on suspicion of burglary, criminal damage to property, and theft. He is being held in the Reno County Jail on $50,000 bond. Detectives say Wichita is where their investigation began. They say the car that thieves crashed into the front of the store was stolen from Wichita.Tracking down the stolen vehicle, along with tips from the public and surveillance video from the jewelry store helped lead to the arrest, Detective Jamie Schoenhoff said. Hutchinson Police also have identified two other suspects, Schoenhoff said.
One of those suspects is already in custody on unrelated charges. He was wanted on a warrant for a burglary that was committed in the Hutchinson area in 1999, Schoenhoff said.
As of late Monday afternoon, police had not picked up their third suspect. "They have been in trouble with the law before," Schoenhoff said. "I believe they are linked to at least one other case somewhere in Wichita, maybe more."
